Americans love to drive...

so, why don't more of them drive with a manual transmission?

  1. Some of us drive automatics not because we prefer them--we don't!--but because it is very hard to find used manual-transmission cars at a good (ie, cheap) price. And some of us are cheap (ie, broke).

  2. Well, I know that new manuals sell for a thousand or two less than new automatics. And, I have heard, and seen some evidence myself, that used manuals generally do not fetch very stellar prices... once you eliminate the sport varieties.

Now, availability is another story. But, that's just it! If people wanted to drive (active sense of the word) their cars, instead of letting the cars drive them, we might see a bigger market in the US for manuals.

  3. Sure, driving a manual is fun, sometimes. But it's MUCH easier to nosh while driving an automatic.

Take Jason. True, he's been known to drive with his knees, leaving both hands free (as reported by Trevor, and for which I totally forgive him. Basically). But there would definitely be a problem when it came time to shift.

No, I think there is better driving control if one eats behind the wheel of an automatic.

One has to think of public safety, after all.

  4. Well, if I was going to raise fairly trivial reasons to drive manual, I might say that it nearly forces one to keep a single hand on the steering wheel, while driving in town at least, allowing one to develop better control with just a single hand!

But, really, Mother, your comment proves a point I made in my first comment. If you can free both of your hands when driving a manual, doesn't that speak to idea that the car is driving you, instead of you driving it?

Jason would probably prefer such a thing... AI-controlled car lover that he is. And, because he has never had the opportunity to learn manual, I don't believe he can have much reason to say driving manual sucks.
